32 Semester Hours

The University of the Cumberlands’ Fifth Year, Non-degree program (Kentucky’s Rank II) in Secondary School Education (8-12, P-12, 5-12) is designed for qualified individuals who have earned a valid teaching certificate (including completion of Teacher Internship or two years successful teaching out-of-state) with a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and passing scores on Licensure Examinations (PRAXIS, NTE, etc.). Specialization hours must be closely related to certification area. Hours are to be selected and approved by Director of the Graduate Program and/or advisor. Required Educational Foundations Core - 12 semester hours

Area of Academic Emphasis - 12 Semester Hours. Specialization hours must be closely related to certification area. Hours are to be selected and approved by Director of the Graduate Program and/or advisor.

Approved Electives - 8 semester hours. Hours are to be selected and approved by Director of the Graduate Program and/or advisor.

EDUC/EDOL 532 Evaluation, Measurement, and Assessment (3 semester hours) - A survey of materials and procedures in the diagnosis of pupil needs and difficulties, the place and use of measurement in guidance, insruction, and evaluation; types of tests, test construction, rating techniques, and the measurement of aptitudes and abilities.

EDUC/EDOL 538 The Modern Secondary School (3 semester hours) - Critical issues affecting organization and administration of the secondary school - recent developments and innovations in currculum. Required for all secondary majors.

EDUC/EDOL 630 Research Methods in Education (3 semester hours) - Introduction to research in education; the purpose of research and ethical considerations; identification of appropriate research methods and interpretation of findings. Standards for written reviews of literature. Required for all Master’s Degree programs and must be taken within the first fifteen (15) semester hours.

EDUC/EDOL 631 Advanced Human Behavior, Development and Learning (3 semester hours)
- The lifespan from conception to young adulthood is studied with emphasis upon biological, intellectual, and psychosocial development. Also included are units on exceptional pupils and understanding of multicultural education. Required for all Master’s Degree programs.

EDUC/EDOL 632 Instructional Design and Curriculum (3 semester hours)
- A study of current curriculum problems and basic principles of curriculum development in the local school system.

SPED/SPOL 632 Consultation & Collaboration for Curriculum Design (3 semester hours) - This course is designed to assist teachers in collaborating and consulting with colleagues regarding specially designed instruction for individuals with disabilities. Knowledge and skills include designing, adapting, and evaluating materials, methods, and resources for individuals with a variety of characteristics. Teaching the core curriculum is included. Various models of instruction, including strategic teaching, are explored. Communication skills and barriers to professional relationships are discussed. Assistive technology, adaptive devices, and equipment are discussed. Field experience is required.
